The ISC is proud to recognize the following players who signed national letters of intent to play scholarship college soccer on Wednesday, February 3, 2010!
Senior Nick Arpey will attend Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. Nick will join a Colgate team that finished 8-8-1 in 2009 in the highly competitive Division I Men's Patriot Soccer League.
Nick joins former ISC stand out and former teammate, Austin Decker, who currently plays for Lehigh in the East Coast based Patriot League. Certainly much anticipation surrounds the contest next year between the former ISC teammates during their Division I conference match-up next fall. Undoubtedly Nick hopes that his extraordinary skill with the ball and deft touch will factor favorably in his team's chances to avenge Colgate's 2009 loss against Lehigh.
Nick's combination of terrific vision, passing, and playmaking skills will serve him extremely well in the college game.
Although Nick's work ethic and persistence will be sorely missed in the ISC, these qualities will engender a positive spirit in the Colgate team and most importantly aid Nick as he navigates his way through the rigors of student life and collegiate athletics.

Will Hirsch signs a national letter of intent to formally announce his commitment to Division II powerhouse Truman State.
Hirsch, who is best known for his unrelenting style of play and his fierce competitiveness, hopes to make his mark with the TSU Bulldogs.
Will joins a Truman State team led by head coach Duke Cochran who hopes his incoming class will help propel the 2010 team even further than the 2009 team that posted an impressive 12-3-1 record in all games.
Will's tenacious and dogged style of defending and his overwhelming energy will be of unquestionable value to his new team. In addition, Will's ability to play center back, outside back, and midfield will give his new coach options as he considers how to include his new player in the team's lineup.
There is little doubt that over time Will's leadership skills and strong personality will be a value that both coach Cochran and the TSU team will rely on as much as Will's ISC teammates and coaches have been able to count on Will over many successful years in the ISC.

Goalkeeper Andy Holte will join the rising Butler University soccer program.
The ISC's "iron man" will join a Division I program on the heels of a 14-3-2 record and a NCAA tournament appearance.
Holte's commitment, steely determination, and his own high standards should help position the Coralville native in the thick of the goalkeeper race at a Butler program that conceded only .63 goals per game last year.
As much as any of the other 2010 seniors in the ISC, Andy Holte helped transform the training culture in the ISC. Few players have inspired as many young ISC players as Holte. He earned the "iron man" moniker by his teammates because of his refusal to accept anything close to mediocrity.
His own toughest critic, Holte developed an immunity to training "burn out." Like many of his other 2010 classmates he also excelled in the classroom and he learned early on that to find success as a student/athlete sacrifices had to be made.
Andy's strength, timing, and quickness in the goal should help him break into the lineup for the Butler Bulldogs.
Holte's mark on the ISC is one that he most assuredly can be proud of and he leaves no doubt in anyone's mind that more could have been done in his pursuit of excellence.

Senior Joe Ryken will join Will Hirsch at Truman State.
There is little question that the Truman State Bulldogs will immediately appreciate the multi-talented and versatile Ryken.
Joe excels as a tough tackler of the ball and inspires his teammates with his competitive spirit. However, Joe is also extremely gifted with the ball at his feet. Ryken has a smoothness and grace about him that all great dribblers possess.
He is a dangerous player when he has room to run at defenders and the ease at which he unbalances defenders is a special talent. Many players with his attacking talents let others on the team do the bulk of the defending work, but Joe's commitment to the team is complete and he is just as capable when defending as when attacking.
While Joe has always been a terrific player, he is one of those players that has only begun to unleash his true potential.
We look forward to watching him continue to grow and progress at Truman State.

Senior Allex Strang will attend the University of Iowa. Allex will join a Hawkeye team that finished 9-10 in 2009 in the highly competitive Big Ten Conference. Allex will join the Hawkeyes along with Jessica Yagla, also an ISC player.
Viewed as one of the Region's top strikers, as well as being one of the most temperamental, Allex has made a name for herself playing for ISC. Her pace, allied to strength and aerial domination make Allex the type of forward not seen very often. Her explosive pace, truly fearless attitude and finishing abilities have made Allex one of the most lethal strikers in the State of Iowa. Most importantly, Allex delivers during the big occasions.
Like many other players Allex hates losing games, but what makes her different from others is that she will change the outcome of the game by taking charge and carrying the team on her back. These great attributes along with her potent physical abilities, her technical proficiency and her tactical knowledge make Allex a perfect candidate for the Hawkeye soccer program.
I have known Allex for a long time and she is a great player. I know that it will be easy for her to settle in playing college because her game is well suited for the Big Ten competition. I can see her becoming one of the stars of the Hawkeye team.
When I think of Allex as a soccer player I think that a good nickname for her would be "THE BEAST" and I cannot stop comparing her with Julio Baptista (Brazilian player who played for R Madrid, then went to Arsenal and then Roma; he also plays for the Brazilian national team). Like Baptista, Allex is technically solid and will bring quality to her new team, but she also brings her big personality. She is extremely strong and even more strong-willed. She is a winner. She can defend, she can attack and she can score lots of goals. Allex is a powerful and versatile soccer player who can operate both in the midfield and as a striker.
Finally, to say the least it has been a privilege to coach Allex for the last four years on a daily basis. I have seen her dedication and love for the game grow every day. Her constant desire to be better, to challenge herself and to challenge me to make her and the team better, is something I will always remember and appreciate. I hope that this desire, competitive attitude and driven desire to be better will transfer to the training and games with the Hawkeyes, and that the next four years will be as successful as her club experience was.
Allex is without a doubt a gifted athlete, a very good soccer player, a great human being and the kind of player every coach would love to have on his/her team. I know that the Hawkeyes are lucky to have her.
We certainly cannot wait for the fall to start and to spend some Fridays and Sundays at the Hawkeyes women's field watching and feeling proud of our local talents.
Congratulation to Allex and her family: Mitch, Kim, Ryan and Brittany Strang

Amanda Ulin has committed to play soccer at Division 1 Valparaiso University.
Senior Amanda Ulin will attend Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, IN. Amanda will join a Crusaders team that finished 11-9-1 in 2009 in a very competitive Horizon League. Amanda's love for the game is in every way contagious and positive for anyone who is around her. Amanda loves to compete in games and is always excited about training. She understands that nothing comes easily and that to be successful requires countless hours of training, hard work and dedication. Amanda is definitely an example for many young girls who dream of playing college soccer in the future.
Since her first days of playing for ISC Amanda has shown magnificent skills, passion and dedication. All of these attributes have grown along with her and have made Amanda a very talented player who gets better with every game. A good nickname for Amanda would be "the Express Train", as she loves to run the wings up and down. When I think of the current Amanda player, I cannot stop comparing her with Cafu (Brazilian right back who played for some of the top teams in Europe and played 4 World Cup finals with Brazil). Like Cafu, Amanda is a great defender who covers the whole wing. She is tireless, skillfull, and dependable. She is always attacking from the back and threatening the other team's defenders. Amanda is indefatigable and able to take on opponents and she really provides a potent attacking outlet. I must say that after seeing women play in the state of Iowa, Amanda has been one of the pioneers in the women's game of attacking from the back, just as Cafu did a few years ago to revolutionize the men's game.
Utilizing speed, balance, an exquisite touch, accurate crossing and when given the chance, ferocious shooting, Amanda has played an important role on every team she has played for. I know that soon she will be able to do the same for the Crusaders and establish herself as one of the best Horizon League right-backs/midfielders.
I cannot wait to see Amanda playing at the next level and I hope that an Iowa vs. Valparaiso game (in Iowa City) will be scheduled very soon.
Congratulations to Amanda and her family: Ron, Brenda, Ashley and Kyrsten.

Senior Jessica Yagla will attend the University of Iowa. Jess will join a Hawkeye team that finished 9-10 in 2009 in the highly competitive Big Ten Conference. Jessica will join the Hawkeyes along with Allex Strang, also an ISC player.
There is no doubt that ISC has been blessed with one of the best athletes and soccer players in the state of Iowa: no soccer fan around the Region can deny this. Jessica controls and drives the midfield and there is no doubt that she is also a motor for her team, while still possessing a humble and unassuming nature. She is indeed an exception in an era where even the most average soccer players vie for media attention. She does her job day in and day out without complaints. She is an excellent dribbler and her dribbling skills have unsettled the best of defensive opponents. Her ability to get into the score sheets is something she will improve on, but no one can deny the fact that many of her teammates make it into the score sheets courtesy of her skills. Overall, Jessica is a versatile "team player". Her extraordinary vision and understanding of the game makes her a very lethal player for defenses. Jess is a tireless, disciplined and very coachable player. She possesses many of the tools needed to succeed in a competitive Division I program. Technically, she is a player who enjoys having the ball and can make the hard things seem easy.
When I think of Jessica as a soccer player and the way she plays, a few of my idols come to mind right away. Like Zinadine Zidane "Zizou" (former R Madrid player and France National team) she has the elegance; like Cesc Fabregas (current Arsenal player and Spain National team) she has the fight and consistency; like Iniesta (current Barcelona player and Spain national team) she posseses the speed, skills, magic and humble attitude; and like Enzo Francescoli (former River Plate-Argentina player and Uruguay national team) she has the soccer charm, vision, exquisite touch, inspiring and graceful movements on the field. All of these attributes mixed like a good cocktail make of Jessica a player to enjoy and savor as you watch her on the field. So when I think of a nickname for Jessica I would choose "the Princess". Her looks might be of an innocent soccer player; but her abilities, talents, desire and fight will destroy any opponent who decides to get in her way.
From the first moment I saw her play, I knew she would become one of the brains behind my team for many years to come. Jessica is player who has soccer in her genes; someone who has the taste for good soccer, someone who is humble and someone who has loyalty to greatness. With her passion, desire and her never give up-fight until the end attitude, she often reminds me of the kind of player I once was. She will soon become a player who every Hawkeye fun will respect and love.
"Jessica is truly a healthy and dedicated soccer player, the kind of player that every coach needs on a team".
Fall of 2010 is going to be an exciting one for many of us.
Congratulations to Jessica and her family: Steve, Diane, Mary, Jon and Susan Yagla.
